Burundi, Africa:
A country in conflict

Years of civil war have resulted in the disruption of the education system and economic growth. Government spending on the army has intensified the economic hardship of the population while public assistance is nonexistent. Caught between the warring factions struggling for power, the civilian population is often the focus of both groups. Burundi contains a large population displaced within its borders.

I spent six weeks in Burundi and Kenya. My host was Tony Tate of Human Rights Watch. With Tony’s knowledge of the interior, I was able to document the camps and small villages without government observation that often hinders interaction with the people.
